Caucasus, Sirvan or Quba area, Armenian letters and dated 1912.
The Armenians still lived in the entire Caucasus area back then.
In 1917 the Armenian Genocide took place and in 1920
many Armenians were deported by the Russians from the Quba to west in favour of the Azeri.
But in 1912 everything was still calm...
This is also a historical document. Because it has initials and a date in Armenian script.
There were four initials, that of the second person has been cut out for unknown reasons. Maybe a (messy) divorce? The hole is part of the history of this rug.
This kilim was originally made to hang on a wall. To this end, the maker has made loops along the upper edge, made of the same wool.
An object for hanging.
As it was once meant to.
