The McLaren MP4 / 6 is a Formula 1- race car, designed by McLaren’s Neil Oatley and driven by the Honda RA121E V12-engine for use in the Formula 1-season of 1991. It was driven by reigning world champion, Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Austrian Gerhard Berger.
The MP4 / 6 was the first McLaren that was driven by a Honda V12-engine, that Honda cited on 735 hp (725 hp, 541 kW) at 13.500 rpm. The car was tested by Berger in the low season, but he was not impressed by the first version of the new engine, because he felt it had too little power compared to the 690 pk (515 kW, 700 hp) V10-engine that was used in 1990, car, MP4 / 5B. When Senna returned for the preseason testing, he and Berger knelt together with Honda to try to solve the engine problems. The dominance of McLaren at the beginning of the year was mainly due to the lack of reliability of the Renault V10-driven Williams FW14 with 700 hp (522 kW, 710 hp).
The MP4 / 6 raced the whole year 1991 with a manual “H-pattern” gearbox. An automated manual gearbox (or semi-automatic) was tested during the season (and shown during the Hungarian Grand Prix), but was never considered good enough to be used in a race: Ferrari and Williams were the only teams in 1991 that used semi-automatic gearboxes. The MP4 / 6 would be the last Formula 1-car to win a World championship with a manual gearbox or with a V12-engine.
