This is a beautiful large gumma kokeshi. This kokeshi is titled: 'Nekoyanagi' meaning pussy willow in Japanese. Her kimono is lovely decorated with pussy willow twigs. The red wood contrasts nicely with the blue details of the pussy willow. She is made by the famous Usaburo.

Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children. Later they became popular souvenirs and real decorative items, for some even collector items.
