Round shield of the Atjeh from the north of Sumatra, exquisitely braided with brass appliques, on the back are eyelets for a carry strap. Circa 1880. These shields were used in the 19th century in duels, although according to Meyer in 1880, the klewang was the only proper weapon for this. Captain F. Meyer served in the Dutch-East Indian colonial service and in the 1870s during the war against the Sultanate of Atjeh in the north of Sumatra.
