Leopold II John Joseph Francis Ferdinand Charles of Habsburg-Lorraine (Florence, 3 October 1797 – Rome, 28 January 1870) was the penultimate Grand Duke of Tuscany and the last de facto reigning Grand Duke. After the death of his father on 18 June 1824, Leopold II assumed power and immediately showed to be an independent ruler, backed in this by Minister Vittorio Fossombroni, who was able to thwart the Austrian Ambassador count of Bombelles’ manoeuvre to influence the inexperienced Grand Duke.
Leopold II not only confirmed the ministers who had appointed his father, but immediately demonstrated his sincere commitment by reducing the tax on meat, implementing a public works plan that included continuing with the reclamation of the Maremma (so much so that he was remembered by the Grossetani family with a sculpture monument in Piazza Dante), expanding the port of Livorno, building new roads, developing early tourist activities (then called the "foreigner's industry") and using the mines of the Grand Duchy.
The Grand Duchy of Tuscany was one of the Old Italian states that existed for 290 years, between 1569 and 1859, formed by a Papal Bull issued by Pope Pius V on August 27, 1569, after the conquest of the Republic of Siena by the Medici dynasty, Regents of the Duchy of Florence and already Lords of the Republic of Florence, in the final phase of the Italian wars of the XVI century. Until the second half of the 18th century it was a confederate state consisting of the Duchy of Florence (known as the "Old State") and the New State of Siena, joined in personal union with the Grand Duke. The title originated from the Duchy of Tuscany, then March of Tuscany and then Margraviate of Tuscany, a legal title of territory government of feudal nature in the Lombard, Frankish and Post-Carolingian periods. After the extinction of the Medici dynasty, in 1737 the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty took over and held the Grand Duchy, albeit with some interruptions in the Napoleonic and Risorgimento periods, until the unification of Italy.
