Description
Mask - Wood - Chilunga Ilunga - Chokwe - Angola
1st half 20th century - Good
A fine Chokwe mask from Angola representing Chilunga Ilunga the mythical chief.
H= 21 cm . Wood with remains of Tokula and whithe Kaolin powders.
Typical Chokwe Katanga Cross engraved in the middle of the forehead.
It lacks it coiffure and costume as the hole all around the back rim show was once there.
I don't remember who I bought it from nearly 20 years back. This mask is to be dated before the 1950's seen the wood oxidation.
