Ancestor figure - Wood - Kabeja Janus - Hemba - Congo

Description
Ancestor figure - Wood - Kabeja Janus - Hemba - Congo
2nd half 20th century - Good

In a good vintage condition, a very particularly high wooden authentic Hemba Kabeja Janus statue. The provenance is from the Zvonko Romih Antique Store in Antwerp.

These double figures, called 'Kabeja', always form a man and a woman, back to back with two legs. They represent the couple 'ancestor' of the Hemba people and are reserved exclusively in the houses of the clan and village chiefs, as legitimation of his status and power also in terms of the protection of the members of the clan. This 'Kabeja sculpture' is made of one piece of hard, heavy wood and is patinated.

There are multiple spots of wear, scratches and minor damage to it but this makes this special sculpture authentic.

Dimensions: Height 59 cm x Width 17 cm x Diameter of the foot 17,5 cm.
Weight: Approx. 4,6 kg.
