Among the Dogon, the horse is very present in the Dogon mythology and cosmology. The god creator Amma has created “a living germ”, the basis of the world, using 4 elements. Four couples of twins, ancestors of men, that is, the eight Nommo, were then created. After a period of great chaos inflicted by Ogo, one of the twins, Amma sacrificed the second one and then raised him from the dead by giving him a human form. The resurrected Nommo went down to Earth using an arch which metamorphosed into a horse.
The horse is associated to the Hogon, the religious chief. The Hogon is represented on horseback on rings, or in wooden sculptures of horsemen, or in lost wax bronzes.
