Description
Sculpture (1) - Wood - Blolo Bla Female Sculpture - Baoulé - Côte d'Ivoire
1st half 20th century - Good

The Baule people of Ivory Coast believe that every married man and every married woman have a partner in the ‘other world’ (that is in the afterlife or in the ‘bush’, the world of spirits). These are called ‘blolo bian’ (male) and ‘blolo bla’ (female), respectively. With these ‘spirit spouses’ in the shape of such figures it is possible to communicate, ask them for advice, discuss problems, etc.
Standing on a circular base, slightly bent legs, a cylindrical torso with scarifications at the front and at the back of figure, hanging tapering breasts, the hands touching the breasts, a thick neck supporting an unproportional large head with a remarkable coiffure, scarifications at the forehead and at the temples; fine, partly glossy brownish patina, several agecracks.
Will be well packed and shipped with tracking and trace.

Please look carefully to the pictures to avoid any disputes.
