Typical production of Torre del Greco, a cameo of high craftsmanship made on an entire Cassis Madascarensis shell.
The shell is composed of two layers: the first, ivory or white colour, is removed with small carving tools, the ‘burins’, until obtaining the desired subject. The second is the dark part of the shell, intended to serve as a background to the engraved figure. The result is a small bas relief, very similar to the ‘Stiacciato’ technique of Donatello, with particular chiaroscuro effects from the modulation of the two colours of the shell.
A fantastic piece of furniture in Wunderkammer mirabilia style: the object becomes artwork, the engraving is pure sculpture.
The artist has enclosed in a shell all the maritime symbols: sailboat, eagle and two sirens make this work unique.
