Les Maîtres de l'affiche: monthly edition with the reproduction of the most beautiful illustrated posters of great French and foreign artists, published by L'Imprimerie Chaix, Paris (1895-1900) is the collective name of 256 coloured lithographic posters published between 1895 and 1900. Around the 1890s the streets of French cities were livened up by large, colourful posters. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix played a major role in the conservation of the exuberant atmosphere of the Belle Epoque. It was in those years that this printing company issued chromo-lithographic prints - in the authentic colours – of 256 posters from that time. This collection was reproduced from the original designs of the 97 participants and was composed by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art. Chéret was most published, 67 of his lithographs were included in the series. About 100 images of posters were printed at Cheret's own printing house on Rue Bergere 20 in Paris.
The reproductions were delivered in packs of four pieces each month - for 60 months - from December 1895 to November 1900 - to the customers and in 16 deliveries there was an extra bonus of a specially designed lithograph. These highly successful reproductions, and the later published complete book, are very popular all over the world by poster collectors.
