The Fang is a tribe with a fairly large territory in West Africa. They are particularly known for their wood carvings. The typical masks were worn by men who went from village to village as peace keepers. This mask was to protect them from danger. They were also worn during the inauguration of new tribal members and the prosecution of criminals. Men with these masks appeared in the village after sunset, when it was dark.
and mask with a very nice beige, white and brown patina. The heart shape in the face, prominent nose, high forehead and wrinkly mouth are typical characteristics of these masks.
