This fine, open worked shell object
is made in the style of so-called ‘barava’, ornate openwork plaques. The design on some of these ornaments are geometric, but many include stylised human figures.
They appear to have been associated with burial places and were reportedly used to adorn structures housing the skulls of prominent men or placed on graves.
