Ancient Roman Bronze Large Legionary Eagle, Aquila Fibula brooch - (1)
1st - 3rd century AD

Large Roman bronze plate fibula / brooch in the shape of a Legionary Eagle (Aquila) with spread wings and head turned to one side.

The eagle was a powerful symbol to the Roman military. With each Roman legion a special eagle-bearer (aquilifer) had the honor of carrying the Legionary Eagle standard into battle and to guard its existence.

Height: 44,1 mm
Width: 29,8 mm

Condition: good solid condition, complete with pin (rigid) and catchplate. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images for own impression.

Purchased by the current owner from a Dutch antiques fair in 2020.
