Icon, St. George as a Christian winner (1) - Wood - 19th century

Description
Icon, St. George as a Christian winner (1) - Wood - 19th century
Russia

A masterpiece of Russian icon painting from the 19th century. “St. George as a Christian Victory Bearer” with spear.

Extremely rare and very sought-after depiction of the saint. Hand-painted with egg tempera colour on a wooden panel with chalk background. Very detailed and masterful painting. The saint looks as if he were alive. Perfect colour contrasts. It may be a monastery work. The saint is depicted as a two-quarter figure. Originally, it may have been part of a church iconostasis. The icon has inscriptions. The inscriptions are clearly legible.

The icon and the painting are in good condition, they show typical age-related traces of wear in the form of scratches, minimal paint chips and a hole in the top centre (see photos).

The painting shows very fine craquelure. Partly restored. Probably decorative Russian church icon. The transverse wooden lath on the back is missing.

Very expressive and rare icon. The size of the icon is also impressive.

Dimensions: 44.5 x 40.5 x 2 cm

Definitely a piece for connoisseurs and collectors.
