Icon, Double-sided icon (tabletka) (1) - Wood - 19th century

Description
Icon, Double-sided icon (tabletka) (1) - Wood - 19th century
Russia

Large antique Russian double-sided icon, the co-called ‘Tabletka’ with extremely rare and sought-after motifs:

1. The Archangel St Michael as apocalyptic rider

2. Baptism of Christ

Hand-painted with egg tempera colour on a wooden panel with chalk background. Typical method of icon production in the 18th and 19th century in Russia. Excellent and fairly detailed representation of the saints. Very warm colours. Perfectly matched colour contrasts. The painting has craquelure. Partial restorations are present.

The Archangel Michael stands out especially with his red horse. His robes were made with impressive attention to detail and meticulous diligence (see photos).

The icon is in good condition and has typical age-related traces of wear in the form of colour chips, scratches, dings, especially on the edge, and dirt (see photos). All saints are labelled. The inscriptions are clearly legible. All details are clearly visible in the photos. The photos are part of the description.

A true masterpiece of Russian icon painting (workshop for old believers) and undoubtedly a piece for connoisseurs and collectors.

The size of the icon is also striking.

Dimensions: 44.5 x 37.5 x 1.6 cm
