Boucherouite carpets are handwoven by Berber tribal women following ancient traditions as well as beliefs in creating colourful carpets. Instead of using traditional wool to weave the carpets, the women of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains region weave these carpets using yarn from recycled fabrics, usually cotton. This new practice began in the mid-20th century.
