Russian pelgrims icon depicting the venerable Sebastian of Sokhota abbot of the Poshekhoye convent in the Vologda region. Sebastian came to enter a convent but after years of community life he felt the desire to live in solitude and moved to a hermitage in the dense Poshekhonye woods. When the rumour of his holyness spread many monks joined him and choose him to be their abbot. Sebastian died in 1498. Charming pelgrims icon that most.likely is painted by the monks of the Sebastian of Shokota abbey to earn a lifelyhood. Painted in egg tempera on a solid leafgold background on levkas on linden wood panel. 19th century icon of a rare theme in a good condition.
