Charming baptism icon depicting the Holy Barbara ( 306- 328 AD), wearing the martyr crown and a martyr cross. Barbara is also called Barbara of Nicomedie in Asia minor, were she was born. Her pagan father imprisoned her in a tower to prevent suitors to get in contact with her. When she ordered 3 windows to be made in her prison , symbolising the Holy Trinity and when her father found out that she had converted to Christianity he had her purged and at the end beheaded her personally, after which he was struck by lightning. Barbara is one of the 14 helpers in dire need. She is invoked to help against fire and lightning and is amongst others the patron saint of miners, tunnel builders, fire brigades, the dying etc. She is also invoked against a sudden death.
Icons like this charming small icon were given in tsarist Russia as a baptism gift.
