We are delighted to present this stunning first-edition of Betussi’s Italian translation of Boccaccio's De Genealogiis Deorum Gentilium, including a full-page family tree woodcut and hundreds of woodcut initials. Bound in vellum, this work is in extremely good condition.

The Genealogia was written in about 1360 by Giovanni Boccaccio, the Italian writer, poet, and Renaissance humanist. Boccaccio’s genealogy of the pagan gods and his interpretation of antique mythology was the first medieval era book to study classical mythology. Split into fifteen books, this work is considered one of the first Humanist documents.

Guiseppe Betussi (1520-1575), the foremost Boccaccio scholar of his day, was a writer and poet best known for his themes on love. He translated Boccaccio’s Latin work, and indexed it, adding a biography.

Overall, this book presents a most pleasing appearance as well as being a fascinating artefact in the history of Humanism.
