I like to show sketches: they allow you to follow the process of the artist. This sketch clearly shows why I keep coming up with reasons to make larger drawings: I enjoy it immensely. The alibi I came up with at the time was “inside vignettes” in the Collector’s Edition acting as a kind of front plate of the chapters of a story.
This is the chapter "Strand" (beach): the scene where Franka first sees Rix in "Het Portugese Goud-schip". I sketched this moment in different
shots: this one shows her staring at him in cheerful surprise. Full-body Franka, firmly sketched, beautifully framed by Portuguese fishing boats.
Drawing: pencil on sketch paper, 40 x 29 cm.
