FV032 In the past, when everything was better, I needed far more sketches to reach the desired result. For example, this is a very elaborate sketch of the print that came with the Collector’s Edition of Het Meesterwerk. The Traction Avant, the theatre and Franka’s clothes could be derived from the book but when I had drawn this composition I saw that there would be a large black wall above Franka’s head. In addition, cars - including beautiful vintage cars - drive on the right side in the Netherlands. The first sketch is possible, it is a square and the wall is not really too ugly, but it makes slightly more sense and looks slightly better the other way around.
Of course, I could have though of this after just a few scribbles. But it is a very nice sketch!
This lot includes the first design and the colouring of the final print, for comparison.
