Pare Fetish.
Tanzania.
The Pare tribe can be situated in the more mountainous region of northern Tanzania, around mount Kilimanjaro. The representation of ancestors in a dynamic, asymmetric pose is not unusual in east African statuary. This object leans back in a very expressive manner, resulting in a different expression depending on the spectator's point of view. Typical elements of the Pare style are clearly observable, think of the abstracted eyes, nose and mouth bundled close to one another, the large spoon-shaped ears and stump-like hands and feet. The cloth wrapped over the chest encloses a horn and other natural materials with sacred and spiritual value.
