Luba Kabila Bowlbearer.
DR Congo.
Referred to as "kabila" or "mboko", this Luba sculpture is a typical bowlbearer used in sacred tribal ceremonies. The kabilas most commonly appear as female figures, either sitting or kneeling. The object's charismatic posture, great proportions and refined detailing of limbs and traits is a beautiful execution by the indigenous sculptor. This representation shows strong elements of the Luba imaging such as the kaposhi cross-shaped headdress with additional detailing on top of the head. The scarifications on the woman's body were seen as elements of distinction in terms of identity and social status.
