1865 1d "Royal" reprint plate proof in black from plate 66 die II watermark large crown inverted.
Mint hinged with four margins and original gum.
It is reported Queen Victoria requested reprints of the Penny Black for members of the Royal Family. Five sheets were printed. One was given to the Prince of Wales, One to the Duke of Connaught, One to the daughter of the King of Belgium and another to the Emperor of Germany. The fifth sheet was kept at Somerset House. A letter to J.P. Bacon from Ormonde Hill exists making this request. It was printed from the plate 66 Die II used for Penny Reds and is on paper with an Inverted Large Crown Watermark.
Very slight thin to bottom left corner.
Only five sheets were printed so quite rare.
