An incredible artwork painted by Ron Embleton (1930-1988) for a comic adaptation of 'The Ring of Nibelungs' (Der Ring des Nibelungen)-a cycle of four epic music dramas composed by Wagner. The works are based on characters from Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied.
In these dramatic panels, Woton and Loki hunt out Alberich who wears a ring and a magic helmet stolen from the Rhine Maidens...Alberich transforms himself into a fire-breathing serpent to demonstrate his mighty powers.
Loki tricks Alberich into proving he can also turn into something small, and Woton stamps on him before he can reach the magic helmet. He relinquishes the stolen gold, but curses it.
Each of these beautifully painted scenes show off Ron Embleton's incredible talent for figure painting, detail, use of colour, layout and his ability to create drama.
Embleton, a stoic contributor to British comics drew Strongbow the Mighty, Wulf the Briton, Wrath of the Gods in Boys' World, Tales of the Trigan Empire, Johnny Frog in Eagle, Stingray (TV Century 21) and Wicked Wanda (Penthouse).
