About 11.4 x 10.1 cm (sheet size about 21.4 x 15.5 cm). Beautiful cop on laid paper, in good condition, sharp and well preserved, 3 woodworm holes also affecting the image.

One of the woodcuts recognised as works by young Albrecht Durer, who lived for some months in Basel in 1494. It comes from the work (Das Narrenschiff, Basel, 1494) (The Ship of Fools), written by his fellow humanist and friend Sebastian Brant and published for the first time in 1494.
In this scene the madman overestimates his fortune, does not run away when the house is burning and lightning strikes the house.

In Das Narrenschiff, Brant describes follies and vices, each undertaken by a different madman. Some of the chapters have as their common theme a ship that will bring the fools assembled to Narragonia, the island of fools. The author of Das Narrenschiff was a devout Catholic. His book Narrenschiff was intended to be an attempt to reach the German people by using the tool of satire to encourage them to get rid of their sins and vices.
