EJG - Jean Gauthier
A nice pair of French art deco wall sconces in nickel plated bronze or solid brass made around 1930. The mounts hold beautiful shades in clear frosted pressed glass made by Jean Gauthier. A hard to find model which always has a double signature. It's signed J.Robert and on the rim it's marked EJG 714. The shades are not completely clear. They have a hint of very light greyish lilac. The wall sconces are in very good condition. The mounts still have their original nickel plating. The lamps are about 20 cm high and they project some 24,5 cm from the wall. The hexagonal shades have a diameter of 11.2 cm.
The sconces are cleaned and I rewired them with new E14 sockets so you can use our modern light bulbs for them. I will add two good quality LED bulbs to the parcel.
Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first worldwar Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades sometimes done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
