EDO period/history:
Coinage was reorganised at the beginning of the Edo period. The shogunate established the mints Kinza (金座), Ginza (銀座; also see the Tokyo district of the same name) and Zeniza (銭座), which minted gold, silver and copper coins. Typical for the coinage in the Edo period that the metals formed three currency levels, which did not have a fixed relationship to one another, but were exchanged using the daily rate.
