Lewis Baltz (1945-2014) was a visual artist and photographer who became an important figure at the start of the New Topographics movement in 1975. The members of this movement were Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, Joe Deal and Stephen Shore.
In this book from 2001 (the first version was printed in 1974), Baltz shows what the then modern industrial areas looked like in 51 b/w photos. He showed how the countryside changed through human influence, in line with the critical principles of the members of the New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape.
