Arts & Crafts decanter. Christopher Dresser visited the Japanese island of Awaji in the 1980s. The ceramics that were traditionally made there inspired him in terms of shape and glaze. This vase shows that Japanese influence but from the enamelled decoration we can see that this piece was made in England. Unfortunately it is not signed, although there is a vague spiral shape in the centre at the bottom. Arts & Crafts, from the end of the 19th century, was the prelude to Art Nouveau and was especially of great influence on the Wiener Sezession.
