This is, without a doubt, an absolutely exceptional piece. A "Pico Ancoriense" type hand axe unique for its technical perfection of carving, its slender shape and its excellent condition.
The Galician-Portuguese coastal deposits that accumulate extensive pebble terraces have been battered by the ocean waves for thousands of years. This has caused a very considerable degree of erosion in so many tools that have been found there. Other times the waters violently shake these stones, provoking frequently fractures, especially in those most fragile pieces.
Finding a piece of this beauty in so perfect condition is really, really difficult. (Important: I always want to be honest and I must point out the existence of a small tear that can be seen in the photos)
There is no comparable piece in any museum that I have visited.
My fathers Pedro Díaz Alvarez Galaico-Portguese palaeolithic collection is probably the most important that exists. A part of it is present in Galician museums (not always exhibited !!?)
Some illustrative and contextualizing pictures added at the end of the photo gallery.
The Ancoriense / Camposanquiense culture has unique characteristics. It´s only related to the Asturiense culture. It should be studied in much more depth...
