Kelley was inspired by the work of artist John Baldessari. He practised various art forms such as figurative drawing, assemblage, collage, performance, installations and video art. For some time he was a member of the band Destroy All Monsters. He designed the cover of the album Dirty for Sonic Youth. The artist became known for his work of bundled cuddly toys based on childhood memories. He tried to break the boundaries between high and low art.
Kelley collaborated with artists such as Paul McCarthy, Tony Oursler and John Miller.
At the time of his death, Kelley was working with guest curator Eva Meyer-Hermann on a retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam that was to be shown at the reopening of the museum in 2012.
