Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, simply known as Ronaldo (Rio de Janeiro, 18 September 1976), is a Brazilian sports executive and former footballer (striker). He has been the owner of Real Valladolid since 2018.
Nicknamed O Fenômeno (in English “The Phenomenon”), he is considered by many to be the strongest striker of his generation, as well as one of the best footballers in history.
In the national team he won two World Cups (United States 1994 and South Korea-Japan 2002), two America’s Cups (Bolivia 1997 and Paraguay 1999) and a Confederations Cup (1997). In the Japanese-Korean World Cup, won thanks to his two goals in the final, he was the top scorer and was named second best player behind the German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, and was included in the ideal team of the tournament. Until the 2014 edition, he held the title of best scorer in the history of the World Cup, with a total of 15 goals (4 in 1998, 8 in 2002 and 3 in 2006).
Individually, he won two editions of the Golden Ball (1997 and 2002) and three of the FIFA World Player of the Year (1996, 1997 and 2002); together with Zinédine Zidane, he is the player who won this prize several times. Listed by Pelé in March 2004 in the FIFA 100, the list of the 125 best living footballers, he was ranked 13th in the list of the 100 best players of the 20th century, drawn up in 1999 by World Soccer. On 9 March 2018, in the same period of the 110th anniversary of the foundation of Inter, he was the first striker included in the Hall of Fame of the Milanese club.
After retiring from football, Ronaldo continued to participate in the initiatives promoted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), of which he has been ambassador since 2000.
