A pharmacist and physician, Virey was extraordinarily prolific as an author, and his writings span a wide range of both practical and philosophical interests, including pharmacy, medicine, natural philosophy, anthropology, social hygiene, mental health, etc. "Remarkable is his Histoire naturelle du genre humain, a typical work of early nineteenth-century anthropology in its generalizations on the types of man, customs, religion, psychology, language, childhood, women and social organization".
