This polishing stone comes from southern Mauritania near Kiffa. Here pearls were widely manufactured from quartz and agate, some of which were included. The stone is a very fine-grained sandstone that gave the rough pearls a smoothly finished surface after they were drilled and retouched to size by professionals.
Kiffa is still known for its pearls, although it is now more about glass specimens.
