Roosschelling Zeeland 1601.
Obverse: Decorated cross with a lion in the waves in the middle. Surrounded by the text 'LUCTOR ET EMERGO' (I struggle and come up), with a castle behind it (mint master's mark Zeeland).
Reverse.: Province coat of arms (lion in the waves) surrounded by the text 'MO NO ARG COMIT ZEELAN' (in full: MONETA NOVA ARGENTEA COMITIS ZEELANDIAE = New silver money from the county of Zeeland). Above the coat of arms the year with a castle between the first (16) and the last two digits (01).
Mint master: Melchior Wijntgens.
Literature: Verkade 92.4, with the caveat that Verkade only mentions the apparently most common version with a castle in the middle of the decorated cross on the front. This version - with a lion - is not mentioned in the Verkade coin book.
A nice and beautiful coin. Quality: one impact crack, otherwise almost very fine (see photos).
