Histoire naturelle des oiseaux - Eleazar Albin - Pierre de Hondt - 1750- 3 volumes.

First edition in French, embellished with over 300 prints in homage to Charles Alexandre Duc de Lorraine, governor of the Austrian Netherlands.

Eleazar Albin (circa1680-1741). Histoire naturelle des oiseaux ... augmentée de notes & de remarques curieuses, par W. Derham. The Hague: Pierre de Hondt, 1750.

Quarto (287 x 225mm).

Edition expanded with notes by W. Derham. The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1750 - 3 quarto volumes (286 x 226 mm), marbled calfskin (period) binding, adorned ribbed spine, sprinkled edges.

First French edition. A monumental work on birds dedicated to His Royal Highness the Duke of Lorraine.

It is illustrated with 306 plates of birds, drawn and engraved by the painter Eléazar Albin.

The birds are depicted in their most varied poses, and many species are shown for the very first time. As such, this is an exceptional work and a reference book.

The translation by printer Pierre de Hondt includes notes by William Deham, a member of the Royal Society of London.

A rare and highly sought-after edition (see prices in auction sales and on specialised sites).

Superb. Published in 1750 (first French edition).

Signs of age, but on the whole, magnificent.

Volume 1: the front cover is in good condition. Lovely heraldry on the front. Signs of wear on the back cover and presence of a small, shallow hole in the leather. The heraldry is visible but marked.
Spine in good condition. The joints and raised bands show signs of age-related wear.
The top edge is in good condition.
The corners of the covers show some signs of wear.
A signature on a page preceding the endpaper and an unnumbered page with a tear and a partial lack.
The endpapers are complete.
The volume is complete, no numbered pages missing.
The binding is undamaged (no loose pages).
Yellowed paper and some inconsequential age-related stains and soiling on the pages. Engravings in superb condition.

Volume 2: The front cover is in average condition with some stains in the lower left corner. Lovely, very visible heraldry on the front. Signs of wear on the back cover, mainly on the edges. Lovely, very visible heraldry.
Spine in good condition with wonderfully engraved leather. The raised bands show some age-related signs of wear, but nothing serious.
A 10 cm tear in the joint of the front cover.
The top edge is in good condition.
The corners of the covers show some signs of wear and some tears.

The endpapers are complete. A page preceding the endpaper is damaged (creased, worn and detached from the binding).
Some scribbling in pencil on one blank and unnumbered page at the end of the volume.
The volume is complete, no numbered pages missing.
The binding is undamaged.
Yellowed paper and some age-related stains and water stains predominantly on the part of the comments up to page 70. The pages of this volume are overall in better condition that that of Volume 1 (minus the stains or soiling). This volume contains most of the engravings (catalogue). The engravings in this volume are superb.

Volume 3: The front cover is in good condition (only a stain in the upper left corner). Lovely heraldry on the front. The back cover is in lovely condition despite some signs of wear and three small holes. The heraldry is very visible.
The spine is in poor condition. The raised bands show age-related signs of wear.
The joint of the front cover is partially torn over the whole length and the joint of the back cover has a tear of 10 cm.
The top edge is in very good condition.
The corners of the covers show some signs of wear.
The endpapers are complete, with a crease.
The volume is complete, no numbered pages missing.
The binding is undamaged (no loose pages).
Yellowed paper and some age-related stains and soiling, however, insignificant in regard to the pages. Less soiling and stains than in Volume 1, and in even better condition than Volume 2 as far as the paper is concerned.
The engravings within are magnificently preserved.

For collectors and lovers of exceptional works.
