Brückmann wrote this work on the basis of studies in the mining regions of Germany and Hungary and with a thorough knowledge of the mining literature. He cover the mines of all European countries, but also those of Africa, Asia and America (eg. gold panning, silver mines in Potosi). Both volumes also have short sections on Brazilian mines. The supplement deals exclusively with Swedish mining. In addition to minerals, the plates show numerous mining plans and views of mining towns in the Hartz region (eg. Goslar, Sankt Andreasberg, Claustal, etc.).
Franz Brückmann practised medicine in Weferlingen and also devoted himself to his interests in the natural sciences. He then moved his practice to Braunschweig and later received a considerable legacy, after which he travelled and became interested in minerals, fossils and geology. In 1725 he returned to Braunschweig and from 1728 he lived in Wolfenbüttel, where his association with the Duke of Brunswick also gave him the opportunity to practise medicine and to write many scientific books and articles on the natural sciences.
