NOTE:
Medal No. 1 is part of the series issued between 1818 and 1845 by Pierre Amedee Durand (1789-1873) on the model of the 'Gallerie metallique des grandes hommes francais', to which medal No. 2 belongs.
The first depicts Christiaan Huigens (1629-1695), who was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer and inventer, and is considered one of the major exponents of the scientific revolution of that century.
The second depicts M. F. Xavier Bichat
(1775-1802), who was a surgeon and physiologist who worked in France and is considered one of the founders of modern histology.
