Development and deployment.
In the 1970s, the project "Bahn 2000" was launched, this a new expansion programme for the Swiss Railways, the SBB. In 1985 an request was made for the development a new series of locomotives that became known as the Re 4/4 VI. In 1987, 1989 units were ordered, followed by a further 1992 units in 87 and another 20 units in 1992. The first locomotive, that according to the new nomenclature of the SBB was then referred to as the Series 460, was taken into service in 1992. These locomotives have 4 axles and 4 motors and are manufactured by the companies ABB and SLM. Each motor has a maximum power output of 1560 kW. The latest technological advances were incorporated into the design and manufacture of this locomotive. The engineer’s cab, for instance, was not made out of metal but out of fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). The entire front was then glued onto the rest of the locomotive.
The Series Re 460 was deployed both for passenger and freight transport. In 1994, an Re 460 was decorated with the advertising - this for Agfa film - for the first time. This was an additional source of income and proved to be a success, after which more and more Re460 locomotives were decked out in advertising livery.
