Mainline history: The Series V 200.0 (later the Series BR 220) was developed in the early 1950s by Krauss-Maffei with the participation of most of the West-German locomotive construction firms. The V200 had two 1100 Hp engines and reached a top speed of 140 km/h. The locomotives were used for both freight and passenger transport. A total of 86 were built, of which 5 were pre-series locomotives.
By the late 1950s, the V 200.0 was no longer powerful enough to haul the longer freight and passenger trains. This created all the more reason to build a more powerful locomotive, which came to pass as the V 200.1 (later the BR 221) which had 2 motors of 1350 hp each.
