Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-1669). The descent from the cross by torchlight, 1654. Etching and drypoint, 21 x 16,1 cm (platemark), 40 x 29 (sheet). On laid paper with watermark. Original Rembrandt etching made from the original plate, Platemark clearly visible. Probably impression of 19th century. It is an excellent impression, with strong contrasts, in perfect condition. Only state.
The composition is built up in the form of a diagonal from upper left to lower right. The only source of light is the torch illuminating the action in the upper left and the strectcher in the forground, with Joseph of Arimathea is covering with a sheet. Behind him are the vague figures of mourners.
One of the most impressive representations of this subject in all European art
