Stunning French Empire- style silver Cruet Set 1800-1810.

The cruet stand has the shape of a ship's hull that reminds me of a Viking ship (a true eye-catcher).

This masterpiece was made at the beginning of the 19th century around 1800-1818 by Ambroise Mignerot.

AMBROISE MIGNEROT’s Makers Mark shows an A and an M with a ‘nacelle’ topping the letters and a dot underneath them. His mark was created in 1800 and cancelled (biffe) in 1818. His offices were first located 2 rue Jean Robert, then 62 Rue du Temple. Ambroise MIGNEROT took under his wing a young Denis Garreau that would later inherit his offices.

On either side of the cruet holder are 2 Griffin / mythical animals with a shield in the middle with a bow above it as decoration. All edges are decorated with a beautiful shell / leaf motif in the Empire style.

A griffin, also called griffin bird or Bird Gripper, is a hybrid mythical animal that symbolizes dominion over two realms: over the earth (its lion's body) and over the sky (the head and wings of an eagle). It is a hybrid creature like the centaur, dragon and hippogriff. In addition to the listed features, it also has horse ears and a mohawk that appears to be made of fish scales.

A wonderful detail for the collectors: The piece is marked with what is known as a ‘Head of Greek Women’ with the letter P on the left hand side. This is a hallmark that was used during the Revolution between 1793 and 1794 in Paris.

The Hallmark is ‘2ieme Coq’ -1st title (950/1000) – 1809 -1819- Paris +

The silver master was probably very proud when he finished making this beautiful piece, because as far as I can tell he struck it no less than 26 times with master's marks and various silver marks !! (view all images for details)

The silverware is in very good condition for its age, without any damage or old repairs. (the bottles with stoppers are not original but are included in the purchase).
