A lovely 18th century edition, published in Lausanne, of the account of James Cook's SECOND VOYAGE, in 6 octavo volumes bound in 3 elegant period bindings, in very lovely condition.
To go "... not only farther than any man has gone before me, but as far as I believe it is possible for a man to go" was Captain Cook's motivation for his second voyage, undertaken between 1772 and 1775 in the Southern Ocean: the Marquesas Islands, the New Hebrides and New Caledonia.
Cook's narrative begins with a trip to the South Pole. It is completed by a glossary of the language of the Society Islands, astronomical observations and a discourse on the health of seafarers (Volume 6).
The translation was done by Suard.
