‘My painting is made up of variable elements and constant elements. Variable elements include those relating to landscapes and figurative aesthetic ideas. Among the constant elements are those concerning the painting structure. I believe that we cannot speak of the expression of pictorial sentiments without taking into account these architectural elements, which subordinate to themselves all the figurative values of shape and colour. These principles must be joined by that of spatiality, which is not to be confused with perspectivism; since the value of spatiality never has, so to speak, visual origins. This concept is a fundamental expression in my painting.’ (Giovanni Borgonovo).

A large private collection, with works partly unpublished of extraordinary value. The artist’s works were sold at auction by Sotheby’s and by the main Italian auction houses. A choice aimed at creating a great retrospective and promoting the artist, taking him back to the centre of the Italian art market. Borgonovo was an important landscape painter and portraitist of the Italian 20th century, who took part in six Biennale editions and won the 1920 Prince Umberto Award with his work ‘Tramonto dicembrino nella campagna Milanese’, then purchased by the Edison Company of Milan. A refined and passionate painter, he did not stop at the honours and awards he acquired between the 1920s and 1930s in the most important Italian showcases, but to success he preferred the deep reasons of life and art that drove him away from the Milanese territories. His ‘pictorial happiness’ remains ‘extraordinarily independent’ in his formation and growth, ‘with a singular disinterest not only in the 20th century but also in the trends of his time’, as far away as it was from the anxieties of the avant-garde and from the tormenting doubts about the destiny of painting. ‘In him you do not feel the weight of the 20th century nor the weight of a traditional art’.
The artist Borgonovo Giovanni was a Lombard painter active in the 20th century. He was born in Milan in 1881 and died there in 1975, at the age of 94. (Wikipedia).
