The 05 003 was built by Borsig to a design by Adolf Wolff with a totally different construction methodology. The train drivers cab was in the front, while the traditional front end with firebox, smoke stack and cylinders were on the tender side. The engineer thus had a clear view of the tracks. In America this was the usual format and was called cab forward. This locomotive was fired with powdered coal instead of the usual coal, and due to the large distance between the firebox and the tender, the fuel was delivered through a delivery pipe powered by a steam turbine. The locomotives had a bar-frame with very large driving wheels with a diameter of 2300 mm mounted with bearings, and were equipped with a tender of the type T 37 with a wheel arrangement of 2'3. The streamlining included both locomotive and tender, and for the moving parts this was done with shutters.
