During the construction period from 1863 to 1871, these locomotives were continually improved upon and the locomotives from the first series were upgraded.
The steam pressure was increased to 10 bar and the screen to protect the stoker and the operator from rain and driving wind was replaced by a closed cab.
As from 1872 onwards, these machines were given the newly developed Westinghouse braking system.
The tenders were fitted with roofs to protect the peat from moisture.
The peat-fired locomotives were fitted with pear or cone-shaped smokestacks which prevented excessive sparks.
