Up to 800,000 people were deployed to the area of Chernobyl in 1986 in the first months following the disaster. They put out the fires, carried out evacuations, collected dead animals, built supply roads into the radioactive hell, walled-in the reactor, laid power lines and pumped out the contaminated water. They were from the army and the fire brigade, but up to that point, most were civilians. Shop assistants, nurses, engineers, workers, doctors, pilots, cooks, cleaners.

Decoration - Border Troops - USSR.
They were under the authority of the State Security Service of the Soviet Union with its various names (Cheka, GPU/OGPU, NKWD/MGB, since 1954 KGB) and formed part of the armed forces of the Soviet Union. Original with case.
