Up to 800,000 people were deployed to the area of Chernobyl in 1986 in the first months following the disaster. They put out the fires, carried out evacuations, collected dead animals, built supply roads into the radioactive hell, walled-in the reactor, laid power lines and pumped out the contaminated water.
