Charles de Harlez, born in Liège on 21 August 1832 and died in Louvain, 14 July 1899, was an internationally renowned Belgian orientalist. The knight Charles Joseph de Harlez de Deulin was born into an old aristocratic family, but he decided to move away from a predestined career in order to devote himself to the study of religion and theology.
For most of his career he studied philosophy, linguistics, and ancient Chinese language and literature as well as the Zoroastrian religion and the Avestic language.
